There has been huge amount of work in February on SLL’s consultation response on Human Rights. We met with Steve Reid and Ellie Reeves to discuss it. Thank you to all the contributors to the response it is a very impressive response.
We have also been able to assist the shadow front bench with a number of advices including for Bridget Phillipson MP (Shadow Education), for Anneliese Dodds (Women & Equalities) on the Equalities Act, and for Ellie Reeves MP (Shadow Justice) on Rape Prosecutions. There was also a meeting with the Scottish Labour Party on Violence Against Women and Girls and a meeting with the Bar Council on criminal legal aid.
We held a training session for SLL members on providing advice to the Shadow Front Bench with Dan Jones, George Peretz, and Dave Drew.
We launched this year’s Mentoring Scheme with Ellie Reeves with 24 mentees. Thank you to Dan Jones for important work coordinating this scheme.
We held the Junior Labour Lawyers AGM on 28th February which went well (despite the heckling of my 1 year old). Thank you to outgoing Chairs Rosalee Dorfman and John Morgan and congratulations to the new Chairs Barney McCay and Sophie O’Sullivan.
Thank you also to Jaime Susskind for coordinating the first SLL tech group meeting.
As many will know, SLL is one of twenty socialist societies and on 2 February I chaired a Socialist Societies Executive meeting with David Evans, General Secretary.
On 26 February I and other SLL members joined other Socialist Societies to campaign for Paulette Hamilton in the Birmingham Erdington by election and enjoyed the hospitality of the Labour Party Irish Society afterwards. I met several shadow ministers who gave glowing reports of SLL assistance.
