Housing group webinar: ‘How Labour could “level up” Britain? An exploration of local devolution and planning solutions’
Creating a more equal society has always been at the heart of Labour’s policy programme. Belatedly the Tories talk of levelling up our communities but do they really have serious plans to do so? In this webinar, arranged by the SLL Housing Group, we will consider a range of concrete ideas and approaches for the levelling up of our communities, focussing on local devolution, place based and planning solutions.

Panel:
- Stephen Hockman QC (Chair), former Chair of the Bar and of the SLL. He practises from Six Pump Court, Temple and specialises in environmental and health and safety law.
- John Tomaney, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at UCL. He was a member of the UK2070 Commission on regional inequalities, chaired by Lord Kerslake, and contributed to Labour Together’s work on Labour’s Covenant, focusing on the politics of place.
- Jessica Crowe, Corporate Director of People, Policy and Performance at LB Newham. She has extensive experience of the challenges facing local authorities in implementing planning frameworks, and has been closely involved in local decisions about how to use Levelling Up funding. She has also been a driving force in Newham’s innovative approach to community participation in decisions about use of the Community Infrastructure Levy
- Marc Willers QC, senior member of Garden Court Chambers in London and also a member of the Irish Bar. Marc specialises in planning and environmental law; public and administrative law; human rights and discrimination law, with a particular emphasis on the representation of Gypsies and Travellers.

Junior Labour Lawyers Virtual Webinar: ‘The UK Supreme Court – how it works and how to win’
The event will be hosted by one of the Supreme Court’s twelve judicial assistants for 2020-2021, Oliver Jackson. In that time the Court decided such cases as R (Friends of the Earth) v Heathrow Airport, Merricks v Mastercard, Arch v FSA (the Covid-19 Business Interruption Insurance appeals), R (Begum) v Home Secretary, Uber v Aslam, and the landmark human rights decisions R (SC, CB) v Work and Pensions Secretary and R (AB) v Justice Secretary.
Pulling aside the curtain on the UK’s highest court, Oliver will talk about how the Court works, from seeking permission to appeal through to handing down judgment, as well as the best way to present arguments to UKSC judges. There will be plenty of time for questions.

- David Hening, Director of the UK Trade Policy Project at European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE). He recently published this paper on Northern Ireland and Brexit.
- Professor Christopher McCrudden, Professor at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Law. He recently edited this textbook on the Ireland-Northern Ireland Protocol, which SLL’s George Peretz QC contributed.
